My tribal affiliation is Koyoonk’auwi (also known as Concow), whose homelands are in northeast California along parts of the Feather River watershed. I grew up in Berkeley, California, attended the University of California, Berkeley and later the University of New Mexico, where I earned my Ph.D. in English. I’m a poet and writer, a University professor, an amateur musician (accordion, guitar, and vocals), and I enjoy learning about and making photographs. I like folk-dancing, as well as other kinds of dance. I hold a second degree black belt in Aikido. I have always lived in the West: California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado, where I currently reside.
